Why I said yes to this opportunity
There are moments in life when something unexpected presents itself—and you can either step forward or let it pass by.
When the opportunity to join Atlas Ocean Voyages came into my life, I found myself pausing—not because of the travel itself, but because of what it represented.
I’ve been fortunate to travel extensively over the years. I’ve stood on the top of all seven summits and set foot on all seven continents—experiences that pushed me, shaped me, and gave me a deep appreciation for the world and its extremes.
And yet, this opportunity felt different.
Travel has never been the daunting part for me.
But change—even welcome change—has a way of asking us to reflect.
What made this opportunity even more meaningful is that my connection to Atlas—and to the ship itself—didn’t begin here.
I have the distinct honor of serving as the Godmother of the World Navigator, and I’ve had the opportunity to spend time aboard before. That experience gave me an early understanding of what makes this style of travel so unique—not just the destinations, but the way they are experienced.
It offered a different perspective—one that is less about reaching extremes, and more about engaging with the world in a thoughtful, comfortable, and deeply enriching way.
Over time, my perspective on travel has evolved.
Where once the focus may have been on challenge and achievement, it has shifted toward connection, understanding, and meaning.
Some of the places I’ll be visiting on this journey are familiar. Others will be entirely new. But what excites me most is not simply where I’m going—it’s how I’ll experience them.
To slow down.
To go deeper.
To see with fresh eyes.
Saying yes to this opportunity wasn’t about proving anything.
It was about embracing a new chapter—one that allows me to share these experiences in a way that feels more open and accessible.
Because what I’ve come to believe is this:
Extraordinary travel isn’t reserved for a select few.
It can be thoughtful.
It can be comfortable.
And it can be within reach.
This blog, Voyages with Karen, is an extension of that belief.
It’s a place where I’ll share both the journey and the perspective that comes with it—bringing you along to experience these voyages in a way that feels possible, not distant.
If you’ve ever wondered whether this kind of travel is for you…
I hope to show you that it is.
